Hotel Sonnenbichl

Summer time

You will most likely also be surprised by the fact that the number of tourists in the summer season surpasses that of the winter season, thanks to the immensely popular mountain tourism in Bavaria.

Let us provide you here with a brief outline of the types of exciting options a summer vacation in mountainous Bavaria has to offer.

First of all, the Bavarian national sport, Wandern (literally: wandering) or mountain hiking needs to be mentioned. It is hard to describe the pleasure and satisfaction that conquering at times 1000 meters of altitude and then enjoying the splendid view from above provides. Several peaks and trails of various difficulties can be found in the vicinity of the hotel. We recommend bringing your hiking shoes along even if you feel unfit for a strenuous hike since there are 4 different lifts within 13 km-s of our hotel that facilitate the uphill portion of any walk.

(Kössen, Kampenwand with its characteristic lacy patterns off of the freeway to Munich, the neighbouring Hochplatte, and Geigelstein.) You can choose from hundreds of kilometres of bike paths of varying difficulty in the Chiemgau, opting for challenging uphill routes or less rigorous ones that still offer splendid views such as the route circling the Chiemsee.

If you have already tried whitewater rafting, we will gladly provide you with links to the local rafting agencies. If you have not, we highly recommend that you make sure and sign up for this unforgettable experience. Hang gliding, hot air ballooning, and sailplaning can be practiced in several parts of the world. However, the currents and scenery in the Alps heighten the experience. As someone once put it, “Bavarian flyers only leave the uphill currents to land if they can’t go any longer without a beer.”

According to German experts, our town’s airport is “the airport with the best thermal qualities in the country”. Although not every guest may wish to get a sailplane pilot license, a half hour long tandem flying experience offering spectacular views might be of interest to many.

The nearby lake of Wössen with its idyllic surroundings, the fast flowing waters of the river Tyrolean Ache with its pebbly banks, or the world famous beaches of Lake Chiemsee all provide relief from the summer heat.

And since we take pride in offering activities for the non-sport enthusiast and the older generation, here is a list of possible excursion destinations in the area: Boat trips on Lake Chiemsee or Lake Königssee. While the former trip includes a visit to the castle of Bavarian king Ludwig II, the latter one guarantees awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains.

City sightseeing tours, all less than a one hour drive away from our hotel, include Kufstein, Salzburg, and in its vicinity, Berchtesgaden with its famous eagle’s nest. Finally, the favorite city of Austrian and European nobility, Kitzbühel.

What if it rains? – you might ask. No problem. You can simply visit either the ice or the salt caves. In case there is still rain on the third day, and our male and female guests would like to have different programs, we recommend a shopping tour to Salzburg, Traunstein, or the pedestrian street of Rosenheim to the ladies. For the gentlemen, we can easily arrange a beer tasting trip to our partner, the brewery of Wieninger.

Finally, all roads in Bavaria lead to Munich. The city, which lies 100 km from our hotel and can be reached within an hour on the freeway, is definitely worth a trip. We offer to organize trips centred around Oktoberfest or a Bayern-München soccer game.
